This book presents a survey of the theory of coherent states, wavelets, and some of their generalizations, emphasizing mathematical structures. The point of view is that both the theories of both wavelets and coherent states can be subsumed into a single analytic structure. Starting from the standard theory of coherent states over Lie groups, the authors generalize the formalism by associating coherent states to group representations that are square integrable over a homogeneous space; a further step allows one to dispense with the group context altogether. In this context, wavelets can be generated from coherent states of the affine group of the real line, and higher-dimensional wavelets arise from coherent states of other groups. The unified background makes transparent otherwise obscure properties of wavelets and of coherent states. Many concrete examples, such as semisimple Lie groups, the relativity group, and several kinds of wavelets, are discussed in detail. The book concludes with physical applications, centering on the quantum measurement problem and the quantum-classical transition. Intended as an introduction to current research for graduate students and others entering the field, the mathematical discussion is self- contained. With its extensive references to the research literature, the book will also be a useful compendium of recent results for physicists and mathematicians already active in the field.pFrom the reviews:ppThe subject of coherent states and/or wavelets (CS-W) is a hot topic for decades. ??? Personally I prefer the book under review to many other ones published before. ??? It is clearly written, mathematically sound and well illustrated ??? . Short but informative historical remarks in the text additionally guide through the literature. The index is useful too. ??? I recommend this book to everyone who wishes to learn CS-W, or already works in the area, or just needs a good reference source. (Vladimir V. Kisil, Zentralblatt MATH,@V(õÂ?) ¾Ûâ¬
The highly acclaimed and popular Key Stage 3 course for the mathematics frameworkThe highly acclaimed and popular Key Stage 3 course for the mathematics frameworkThe highly acclaimed and popular Key Stage 3 course for the mathematics frameworkSMP Interact: Framework Edition supports a teacher-led, discussion-based approach as the framework promotes. With three differentiated tiers providing coherance and clear progression it has been extensively trialled to ensure effectiveness and excellent value. The series comprises pupils’ books: with one book per year and carefully graduated and supportive texts have clear explanations and layout. Teacher’s guides: Chapter-by-chapter advice on activities and discussion that throw light on misconceptions and build understanding. Optional practice booklets: linked to each pupils’ book with the same structure.’Since we started using SMP Interact in 2000, we have seen an increase in our results for the end of Key Stage tests. Students schieving Level 5 and above has risen from 67% in 2000 to 72% in 2002, and students achieving Level 6 and above has risen from 36% to 41% over the same period. We are very pleased.’ Head of Maths, Oulder Hill Community School, Rochdale’The scheme has had a major effect on teaching and learning in the early years and has helped with the simultaneous introduction of the National Numeracy Strategy.’ Head of Maths, King Edward VII School, Sheffield.’With SMP Interact’s support, our performance in the value-added tables has been above average, and pupils are even scoring level 8 in the end of Key Stage tests for the first time in the school’s history.’ Head of Maths, Charles Burrell High School, Norfolk’These are thoughtfully written, imaginative texts, which maintain a rigourous approach and which are enjoyable for both students and staff.’ Head of Maths, Stratford Girls Grammar School, Stratford upon Avon’The objectives at the start of each section are good and there are loads of interesting activities@(õÂ?) ¾Ûâ¬

HTMLpbMarge Lial/bMarge Lial was always interested in math; it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Marge’s intense desire to educate both her students and herself has inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from California State University at Sacramento, is now affiliated with American River College./ppMarge is an avid reader and traveler. Her travel experiences often find their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. She is particularly interested in archeology. Trips to various digs and ruin sites have produced some fascinating problems for her textbooks involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan./phrpbJohn Hornsby/bWhen John Hornsby enrolled as an undergraduate at Louisiana State University, he was uncertain whether he wanted to study mathematics, education, or journalism. His ultimate decision was to become a teacher, but after twenty-five years of teaching at the high school and university levels and ten years of writing mathematics textbooks, both of his goals have been realized. His love for teaching and for mathematics is evident in his passion for working with students and fellow teachers as well. His specific professional interests are recreational mathematics, mathematics history, and incorporating graphing calculators into the curriculum./ppJohn’s personal life is busy as he devotes time to his family (wife Gwen, and sons Chris, Jack, and Josh). He has been a rabid baseball fan all of his life. John’s other hobbies include numismatics (the study of coins) and record collecting. He loves the music of the 1960s and has an extensive collection of the recorded works of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons./phrpbTerry McGinnis/b- A native Midwesterner, Terry received her Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary Education (Mathematics concentration) from Iowa?õë…¸Qì ¾Ûâ¬
This book is written in a way that changes the perspective of engineers and their adherence to formulas, placing them in a decision-making context. Through clear explanations and real-world examples, the second edition shows how to apply science and technology to solve problems facing society today. The basic concepts of math and science are used in the context of solving these engineering problems. It emphasizes how to use models to collect and analyze information and make technical decisions. Engineers will also gain a stronger understanding of solving engineering problems with MATLAB.

It will take you through the process of creating a game in Flash MX 2004. The first several chapters introduce general processes for creating games, while the second section looks at the important concepts for creating realistic games. Such concepts include math, physics, collision detection, and collision reaction. A third section delves into more creative concepts: tile-based worlds, 3D visualization, artificial intelligence, using graphics, and using sound. Later chapters provide an introduction to multiplayer games, creating a high score list for games, and a selection games for which the authors share the development process, including code. The accompanying CD will provide the code for each function discussed in the book as well as working versions of the games./P
